Winnipeg may be known as the “Heart of Canada,” but the many small towns and communities just outside of the city help to bring life to the region. One up-and-coming community you’ll want to know more about is Lorette, which lies 26 km southeast of Winnipeg.

Safe and scenic and filled with a vibrant sports scene, there are many reasons that this little suburb deserves much more attention. In this post, we’ll look at the who, where, and what that is just starting to put Lorette on the map.

Where Is Lorette?

Lorette is part of the RM (Rural Municipality) of Taché in Manitoba. Nestled along the Seine River and the Dawson Trail, it provides a wealth of scenic beauty that is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. To those searching for a premium location that offers all of the benefits of rural living while being close to the amenities of the city, Lorette checks off all the boxes.

When you do need to get into the city, access to the Trans Canada Highway and Highway 1 makes commuting easy. In other words, you could say that Lorette is smack dab in the middle of the best of both worlds!

What Is There to Do in Lorette?

Do you love having fun in nature? Then your days will be full and packed with excitement when living in or visiting Lorette. A community of friendly volunteers called The Lorette Family Fun Group puts on some fantastic events that will keep you laughing as you get to know your neighbours. Lorette Family Fun Days, Lorette Comedy Night, Elves Shelves, and Lorette Trivia night are just a few that you will want to experience every time they roll around each year!

Every December, the RM of Taché also hosts a fabulous Winter Parade, along with a Tree Lighting that includes cookies with Santa. These events will never fail to put you into the festive spirit.

Ready to delight your taste buds while supporting local business? The Red River Co-Op Food Store is a must-visit location, where you’ll find hundreds of Manitoba-made products on the shelves. The incredible bakery items especially will tantalize your senses. Occasionally, they will even set up a screen outside in their parking lot to showcase a movie for the town residents!

Lorette also boasts plenty of beautiful parks where you can relax or enjoy playing with your family, such as the Centre of Canada Park, Spirit Park, and the Lorette Skate Park. On hot sunny days, little ones will have a blast running and splashing about at Lorette Splash Park!

The Lorette Community Complex provides a variety of indoor and outdoor activities, including public skating, which is a great way to spend a brisk winter’s day! Beautiful winter walks down or snowmobiling down the Seine River may also become some of your favourite activities.

Who Lives Here?

Lorette is mostly agricultural, with many farms and rural homes dotting the scenery. If you’ve ever dreamed of country life, now’s your chance to experience it while never being far from the city.

Reasonable housing prices and a peaceful lifestyle are attractive to families and professionals all over Canada. For those who prefer something in between rural living and the bustling city, Lorette is the perfect choice. A small downtown core features several modern enclaves with upscale housing options, along with easy access to shopping and restaurants.

In addition, Centre Pointe Mall offers any convenience you need without making the trip into Winnipeg. You’ll find essential services like a pharmacy, insurance office, physiotherapy, a day care centre, Anytime Fitness gym, dance studio, and a hair salon. Afterwards, you can stop at Chicken Chef Restaurant for a bite.

Outstanding Education System

Many Lorette residents are also bilingual, conversing easily in both French and English, which is reflected by a superb education system. Lorette is part of two school divisions; the Seine River School Division offers classes in English and French Immersion, with the following schools under its jurisdiction:

  • Dawson Trail School
  • École Lorette Immersion
  • Collège Lorette Collegiate

The second is the Division Scolaire Franco-Manitobaine. This division oversees École Lagimodière, which offers a Full French program for students from Kindergarten to Grade 8.

The Final Debate

As a town filled with sports enthusiasts, it’s not surprising that you’ll find a bustling hockey rink, a curling club, and one of the finest golf courses in Manitoba. We are also home to the Lorette Scorpions, a champion team of the Winnipeg High School Hockey League.

Residents around here tend to be friendly and down to earth. However, if you come, you may be asked to help settle one big debate once and for all.

Ever since a herd of bison stopped traffic along Highway 405 back in 2017, a bison named Freddy has been the town’s unofficial mascot. Freddy is one of the most popular characters around, with his likeness used to sell everything from birthday cards to hoodies, not to mention being a huge favourite among fundraisers.

Most people happily agree on the name. However, a few rabble-rousers want Freddy to be able to retire gracefully to Lorette’s fine, green pastures and be replaced by a chicken instead. This is just a sample of the playful and imaginative discourse we love to engage in around here, and there’s nothing more we would love than for you to join us!
